Communication Technology
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Communication Technology provides an exciting introduction to the world of
communication. You will produce your own promotional videos for DVD, make
animated features and shoot, process, and edit digital photographs. Additionally, you
can design print material such as business cards, posters and magazine covers. Other
projects will include your Life Story, a Day in the Life of a Student, promotional
brochures or sports highlight reels. You will have the opportunity to work on software
such as Adobe Premiere, Indesign CS and Photoshop 7.0.
Modules are offered at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels.
Introductory modules will give students a broad overview of the ever changing multi
media world. Intermediate and Advanced modules will expand your skills and allow
you to focus on areas of interest within the communication field.
Computer Science Advanced Placement
COMPUTER SCIENCE ADVANCED PLACEMENT
These three courses are designed for you if you want to learn programming skills to
prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam which is held in May. Most of the modules
offered will be Programming in C++ and Java. There will be additional optional
modules offered in C++ or Java at the Intermediate and Advanced level. If you have a
desire to pursue Programming at a post secondary level you are strongly encouraged to
register for this course. If you pass all three Computer Science AP Courses and the
Advanced Placement Exam you will have the equivalent of the University of Alberta's
Computer Science 114 Course and will be registered in a second semester computer
science course if you enrol in Computer Science at the university level.
Construction Technology
You will complete modules covering a wide range of topics including basic furniture
and cabinet making, solid stock construction, building with plywood, wood turning
(lathe work), and introductory residential construction. All module work is projectrelated,
with you having a number of opportunities to design and build projects of your
choice.
Intermediate Prerequisite: Introductory Level
If you are registering at the intermediate level of construction technology you may
pursue furniture and cabinet making, residential construction or a blend of the two.
You will choose specific modules in consultation with your teacher. Students intending
to pursue carpentry as a career should take 10 credits at this level.
Advanced Prerequisite: Five credits at the Intermediate Level
At this level you may pursue advanced furniture and cabinet making, residential
construction, stair building, on site work study or a blend of these topics. You will
choose specific modules over the course of the program and through consultation with
your teacher. If you are registered for 10 credits at the advanced level you will have the
opportunity to actually work in some aspect of the building trades for a 3-8 week
period. Although this is an optional component, students have been successfully
placed in cabinet shops, on framing crews and at industrial sites with encouraging
results. Several students have even gained apprenticeships and permanent
employment through this component of the program.

Note: Students who complete 25 credits in Construction Technology may receive
advanced standing in the millwork and carpentry, engineering technology, preapprenticeship
and architectural technology programs at NAIT. These students may also
challenge the first year supervised exams for carpentry apprenticeship at NAIT or Red
Deer College.
Cosmetology
COSMETOLOGY
Cosmetology is the art and science of beautifying and improving the skin, nails and hair and the study of cosmetics and their application.
This course provides you with an introduction to the professional beauty industry in an exciting way. Cosmetology combines the practical application of theory with artistic and creative skills. Cosmetology can be taken for enjoyment, or to explore fulfilling career opportunities within this highly diverse industry.
Fabrication
FABRICATION STUDIES
Introductory
No prerequisite
No experience necessary. If you are curious, come and try it out. Projects at this level
include: weather vanes, planters, wrought iron tables and much more.
Intermediate
Prerequisite: Five Introductory Modules
Intermediate level modules allow you to improve and expand skills developed at the
introductory level. You will begin blueprint reading and small project design work.
You will learn Gas Metal Arc Welding (commonly known as MIG) and Gas Tungsten
Arc Welding (TIG) and will also explore more advanced aspects of metal fabrication.
Advanced
Prerequisite: 10 Intermediate Modules
Advanced level modules prepare you for job placement in the work force. You
continue to do practice welds preparing you for an apprenticeship. The projects you
build will be more advanced using more in-depth blueprints.
Fashion Studies
FASHION STUDIES
This practical course is intended for both male and female students and does not
require previous sewing experience.
Introductory
Focus is on construction skills as you explore garment construction (shirts, skirts, shorts),
repair and recycling of clothing items, personal and home accessories and fibre arts.
Intermediate
You will refine construction skills and explore pattern design. Special topics include
the evolution of fashion, surface embellishment of textiles, working with speciality
fabrics, and sewing for others.
Advanced
You will explore the topics of advanced pattern design, designers and the fashion
industry, tailoring, couture sewing techniques, and cultural aspects of clothing.
Financial Management
Financial Management is designed to provide an opportunity for you to learn about
the development and use of financial information within the context of personal and
business life. You will develop basic bookkeeping skills necessary for success in
accounting and keeping books for a small retail business.
Introductory Level (6 credits)
No prerequisite
You will start the course with a detailed look at the importance of ethics within the
business environment. The "bottom line" is not as important as making the right
choices in your everyday business dealings. You will look at how supply and demand
drives the Canadian economy as well as how the government controls interest and
inflation rates. From there you will begin your introduction of the accounting cycle
from conducting your own personal budget to analyzing your financial position. We
will be using software applications such as Simply Accounting and Excel to help us
prepare financial statements. By the end of the course you will be able to record and
analyze records for any small business. In addition you will have the chance to
complete your own income tax report.
Advanced Level (6 credits)
Prerequisite: Introductory Level
In more advanced sections you will focus on how to establish an accounting system for
a merchandising business. Most intermediate/advanced modules are intended for a
more independent study of the accounting process. There are several areas of interest
for you to choose. You have an opportunity to analyze corporate financial statements as
well as begin to work on accounting software. The later modules at this level will
prepare you for the beginning accounting courses at NAIT and the U of A.
Foods
This is a fun, informative and "hands on" course. It will help you develop skills and
knowledge in lab safety and sanitation, nutrition, meal planning, and cooking
techniques and subsequent presentation. Approximately 50% of class time is spent
doing practical work with emphasis on linking theory with practice.
Horticulture
Introductory No prerequisite
Introductory Horticulture provides an excellent overview of plant production and
maintenance. You will gain knowledge in plant identification and usage for both profit
and personal pleasure. This course will provide you with an opportunity to do hands-
on work in the areas of turf management, landscaping, gardening, greenhouse crops,
and house plants.
Intermediate
Prerequisite: Introductory Horticulture
The Intermediate Horticulture program will expand your knowledge and experience
in the areas of turf management, landscaping, gardening, and greenhouse crop
productions. Practical skills will allow you to gain more hands-on experience with
power tools, fertilizer injection systems, soil analysis, and pest management.
Advanced
Prerequisite: Intermediate Horticulture
As an advanced student you will organize and oversee the greenhouse crop production
and its sales. You can expect to further your skills in landscape design, laying sod,
greenhouse construction/maintenance, soil analysis, and pest management. Sections
of this course may lead to advanced credits at Olds College.
Hypermedia Technologies
Hypermedia Technologies teaches you to apply electronic technologies for personal use
and business use. You will focus on keyboarding, computer applications, website design,
presentations and project work.
Hypermedia Technologies 10 -Introductory Level (6 credits)
No prerequisite
We offer introductory models in the areas of keyboarding, computer applications,
graphic tools and web page design. The modules offered are Workstation Operations,
Keyboarding, Graphic Tools, Spreadsheet, Hypermedia Tools and Web Page Design.
The Applications software of choice will be Microsoft Office, Paint, Photoshop,
Internet Explorer and Dreamweaver.
Hypermedia Technologies 20 -Intermediate Level (6 credits)
Prerequisite: Introductory modules
The modules offered are Keyboarding, Word Processing, Electronic Publishing 1,
Multimedia Authoring 1, and Information Highway 2. The Applications software used
will be Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Flash. The skills developed at
the Intermediate level will be based on skills from the Introductory level.
Hypermedia Technologies 30 -Advanced Level (6 credits)
Prerequisite: Introductory modules
The modules offered are Keyboarding, Multimedia Authoring 2, Information Highway
3, CTR 3130, and CTR3140. The Applications software used will be Microsoft Office,
Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Flash. The skills developed at the Intermediate level
will be based on skills from the Introductory level.
Legal Studies
LEGAL STUDIES
Legal Studies is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes
required to understand the impact of law in your daily lives. It is important that you
become familiar with your individual rights and responsibilities as a citizen of Canada.
You will gain valuable first hand knowledge of court procedures through field trips to
the Edmonton Law Courts as well as guest speakers such as lawyers, judges, police
officers, corrections Canada officials, and those setting the standards for high risk
offenders. As part of the course you will also participate in a mock trial simulation at
the University of Alberta. You will evaluate the effectiveness of the legal system
through debates and class discussions. Throughout the course you will have the
opportunity to discuss many social issues which are affecting society today.

Advanced Legal classes have studied the areas of Consumer and Property Law and Dispute Resolution.
All classes are currently working hard to prepare their Mock trials at the U of A Law courtroom. The law students at the U of A will provide the role of Judges to the trials we will be presenting. Students will participate in both trials as members of the jury as well as role playing all courtroom personnel.
Management and Marketing
MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING
This course is designed to teach you about marketing and management, having goods
and services in the right place, at the right time, and at the right price for consumers.
You will learn how to develop managerial and marketing skills that can be applied in
your personal lives, the community and the workplace. You will examine target
markets, design logos/slogans, create visual displays around the school, promote school
events and have the opportunity to create your own venture i.e., student sponsored
trade fair.
